The FT Story
The FT made its debut as the London Financial Guide on January 10, 1888, rebranding itself as the Financial Times on February 13 of that same year. Characterizing itself as the supporter of “The Sincere Financier, the Genuine Investor, the Reputable Broker, the Authentic director, and the Lawful Speculator,” it initiated as a succinct four-page journal, with its main readership stemming from the financial community in the City of London. Its primary contender during that era was the more audacious and marginally elder Financial News, founded in 1884.
On January 2, 1893, the FT adopted distinctive light pink paper to distinguish itself from the similarly named Financial News. This choice of unbleached paper, a strategy shared by other publications such as The Sporting Times, was initially cost-effective. However, in today’s context, it incurs higher costs due to the necessity of specially dyeing the paper.
After 57 years of rivalry, Brendan Bracken orchestrated the fusion of the Financial Times and the Financial News in 1945, resulting in a unified six-page newspaper. The consolidation capitalized on the Financial Times’ wider readership while leveraging the editorial expertise of the Financial News. Concurrently, the Lex column, originating from the Financial News, was introduced, further enriching the content of the amalgamated publication.
